Misurata is a city in Misurata District in northwestern side Libya, located 210 km to the eastern side of Tripoli on the Mediterranean shore close to Cape Misurata. The estimated population of the city was around 550,000 in 2006, making it the third biggest city in Libya after Tripoli and Benghazi. It is the capital city of Misurata District and known as the business capital of Libya. The port at Misurata is called Qasr Ahmed.
The city is located on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea 211 km East of Tripoli and 825 km west of Benghazi. The position of the city forms a combination of a dualism of sea and sand for it is enclosed by the sea from the northern and eastern side and from the southern side it is bounded by the golden sands mixture with the long palm trees, the shady olives and the green plains which enclose the center of the town with its modern buildings, wide streets, large factories such as the iron and steel complex and carpets and textile factories and a number of establishments, companies and trade centers.
Apart from its unique position, which makes it a starting point for the exchange of commodities and materials with the rest of the cities of the country, the city enjoys a new infrastructure in the field of services such as roads, electricity and communications. It also contains the headquarters of several national companies such as the Libyan Ports Company, Libyan Iron and Steel Company, the Libyan publishing, distribution and Advertising Company. Besides that it has branches of public and private sector banks and one locally and privately owned bank. The economy of the city is run by light industries like carpets, textiles, iron and steel industrial complex. The city has a great potential for growth since it attracts a lot of internal immigration and is surrounded by uninhabited flat land with no obstacles. There is a port in the neighbouring town of Qasr Ahmad.
