Milan is a city in Italy and the capital of the area of Lombardy and of the province of Milan. It was included in a list of ten "Alpha world cities" in the economic report "U.S. Cities in the ‘World City Network’", along with Madrid, Seoul, Moscow, Brussels, Toronto, Mumbai, Buenos Aires and Kuala Lumpur.

The district of Milan is situated in the Padan Plain in the west-central area, inclusive among the rivers Ticino and Adda, among the river Po and the first relief of the Alps. It has a surface area of 181 km2 and is 122 meters above the sea level. The estimated population of the city is around 1,301,394 inhabitants as of April 2009. The metropolitan area of Milan, largely coinciding with its administrative province, is the fifth biggest in the E.U. with an estimated population of 4.3 million. The development of several towns around the city proper since the great economic boom of the 1950-60s has defined the extent and pattern of the metropolitan area, and commuting flows suggest that socioeconomic linkages have expanded well beyond the boundaries of the city.
