 Mbuji-Mayi serves as the capital of Kasai-Oriental Province in the south-central Democratic Republic of Congo. The estimated population of the city was about 2.3 million (2007). The city is located in Luba country on the Sankuru River. The name Mbuji-Mayi is derived from the local language, which means "Goat-Water," a name deriving from the great number of goats in the area and the city’s position on the Sankuru, making it a prime watering spot. After independence the city has developed rapidly with the immigration of Luba from different parts of the country. It was the capital of the secessionist Mining State of South Kasai from 1960-1962 during the Congolese civil war. People came from Thikapa (Kasai Occidental) fleeing from clash. They locate themselves at the place at present called Kalala wa Nkata.

The city handles majority of the diamond mining, panning, and production in the Congo. Societé minière de Bakwanga and Diamant International are the main diamond producers in the region. Irrespective of its large population, the city is extremely remote, having minute link to the bounding provinces and to Kinshasa and Lubumbashi. Air travel is provided through the Mbuji Mayi Airport.
