Mashhad is one of the biggest cities in Iran and one of the holiest cities in the Shia world. It is situated 850 kilometers eastern side of Tehran, at the center of the Razavi Khorasan Province near the borders of Afghanistan and Turkmenistan. The estimated population of the city was about 2,427,316 in 2006. It is well known as the resting place of the Imam Reza. A shrine was later built there to commemorate the Imam, which in turn gave rise to increasing demographic development. The city is also called the city of Ferdowsi, the great Persian poet of Shahnameh, which is considered to be the Persian national epic. It is situated 36.20º latitude and 59.35 º east longitudes, in the valley of the Kashaf River close to Turkmenistan, in the valley of two mountain ranges of Binalood and Hezar masjed. The city benefits from its closeness to the mountains, having cool winters, pleasant springs, mild summers, and beautiful autumns. It is only about 250 km from Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

It is the administrative center of Mashhad County as well as the somewhat smaller district (bakhsh) of Mashhad. The city itself is divided into 13 smaller administrative units, with a total population of around 2,5 million. The city contains mainly of people of Iranian descent. There are also over 20 million pilgrims who visit the city every year.

There are several beautiful large parks, the tombs of historical celebrities in close by Tus and Neyshabour, the tomb of Nadir Shah and Kooh Sangi park and Mellat Park that have several attractions especially for children such as the largest ferris wheel or fanfar in Iran and Koohestan Park-e-Shadi Complex that includes a zoo, where number of wild animals are kept and which attracts many visitors to Mashhad. It also contains the Mashhad Airbase, jointly a military installation housing Mirage aircraft, and a civilian international airport. Several other points of interest are located outside the boundary of the city such as the tomb of Khajeh Morad, tomb of Khajeh Rabi’ and tomb of Khajeh Abasalt.
