Marseille is officially known as Massalia, is the oldest city located in France, and presently its second most heavily populated city after Paris. Estimated population of the city is around 852,395 inhabitants (2007). It forms the third biggest metropolitan region, after Paris and Lyon, estimated population of the metropolitan area is around 1,516,340 (1999) and estimated to be 1,605,000 (2007). Situated on the south eastern shore of France on the Mediterranean Sea, Marseille is France’s biggest commercial port. Marseille is the seat of administration of the Provence-Alpes-Cote dAzur area and the administrative capital of the Bouches-du-Rhone department. The inhabitants of the city are called Marseilles.
Previously, the economy of the city was dependent on port of the French Empire, connecting the North African colonies of Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia with Metropolitan France. The Old Port was developed in to the main port for trade by the Port de la Joliette and now it contains restaurants, offices, bars and hotels. The most part of the port has been redeveloped by using the funds from the European Union. Fishing has a significant role in the food economy of Marseille is still dominated by the local catch, and a daily fish market is still held on the Quai des Belges of the Old Port.
Marseille is the most heavily populated commune in France after Paris and is the center of the third biggest metropolitan region in France. To the eastern side is a small fishing village of Callelongue on the outskirts of Marseille and going to the limits of Cassis. To the northern side of Marseille, is the 1,011 m (3,317 ft) Mont Sainte Victoire. To the western side of Marseille is the former artists’ colony of l’Estaque. The airport is located in the north western side of the city at Marignane on the Etang de Berre. The city’s main boulevard called the Canebiere, goes eastward from the Old Port to the Reforms quarter.
