Manaus is the capital of the state of Amazonas. It is located at the convergence point of Negro and Solimões Rivers. It is the most heavily populated city of Amazonas, and is a well-liked ecotourism destination. Manaus belongs to mesoregion Center Amazonense and micro region Manaus. It is situated in northern side of Brazil, 1,932 kilometers away from the country capital, Brasília. The city was established in 1669 as the Fort of Sao José do Rio Negro. It was recognized with the name of "Manaus", meaning "mother of the gods" in pay honor to the natives of Manos, and formally transformed into a metropolitan city on October 24 of 1848 with the name of Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro, and in Portuguese it means "The City of the Margins of Black River". On September 4 of 1856 it was given the current name. It was famous at the start of this century, as Heart of the Amazon and City of the Forest. Presently it is the financial hub of Manaus.


It is the second biggest urban area in the Northern Brazil and the 12th in entire Brazil, with a population of about 2,006,870 inhabitants. It is the eighth most populous city of Brazil according to data from Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics. The city slowly raised its participation in the GDP of Brazil in current years, increasing the account for 1.4% of the economy of the country.

Although the major industry of Manaus was rubber, its significance has decreased. Timber and Brazil-nuts make up significant trades, along with petroleum refining, soap manufacturing, and chemical industries. As the biggest city and a main port on the river, Manaus is the financial hub of Brazil. Industries include brewing, shipbuilding, soap manufacturing, the production of chemicals, the manufacture of electronics equipment, and petroleum refining of oil brought in by barge and tourism.
