Madaba is the capital city of Madaba Governorate of Jordan. The estimated population of the city was around 60,000. Madaba is the fifth most heavily populated town in Jordan. The city is also known as Byzantine and Umayyad mosaics, particularly a huge Byzantine-era mosaic map of The Holy Land. Madaba is located 30 kilometers south-west of the capital Amman. Ever since the days of Rome, people have come to the thermal mineral springs of Hammamat Ma’in or Zarqa Ma’in for thermal treatments or just to enjoy a warm bathe. Hammamat Ma’in is located in the southwestern side of Madaba. It is a thermal mineral spring that for centuries has fascinated people to come and immerse themselves in the sites’ hot beneficial waters. There is an outstanding 5-star hotel operated by the famous Six Senses group here, which provides indoor and natural outdoor hot pools, a swimming pool and spa facilities.
In 2007, the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities launch the Institute called USAID’s SIYAHA. The objective of the Institute is to be a center of brilliance in the area, and to train locals on a scientific level to preserve and reinstate the many ancient mosaics set up in Jordan. Students are also taught traditional and modern methods of mosaic production, as well as Computer Aided Design (CAD), Arabic, English, geology, and chemistry. Soon, students will also be able to transfer their credits to Al Yarmok University to complete a BA in Archegology with a further two years of study.
A weaving project of Bani Hamida was started by twelve women of the tribe in 1985 and it has become famous for producing beautiful woven items in traditionally bright colors. Conventional ground looms, assembled using stones and sticks, are used for the weaving, and the products can be found at several outlets in Jordan and abroad. Visitors can stop by the weaving rooms, situated in the village of Mukawir, to observe how rugs are produced. The women also make decorative candles.
