Ludhiana is a city and a municipal corporation in Ludhiana district in the Indian state of Punjab. It is the biggest city in Punjab, with an expected populace of 45,00,000. The population of the city rises rapidly in season of harvesting because of the arrival of the laborers from states around such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Delhi. The total area of the city is around 310 km². The city is located on the bank of River Sutlej, 13 km south of its present course. It is a main industrial hub of northern India. This city is situated in the center of the National Highway from Delhi to Amritsar, and is linked to the Indian capital city of New Delhi by road and frequent train network. Ludhiana is the wealthiest district in the state of Punjab, and contains the most exclusive fertile land of all of India. Ludhiana district is considered to be one of the NRI hubs of Punjab.
Ludhiana is situated at 30°54′N 75°51′E / 30.9°N 75.85°E . The average elevation of the city is of 244 meters above the sea level. Ludhiana City is divided in to two sections by its residents which are Old City and the New City. The ground is steeply from the Northern and the Western side, where previously in 1785 the river Sutlej used to run: Now a days this complete area is mostly unplanned suburban communities, with a lots of polluting industries set up in houses due to lack of enforcement of zoning laws. The beautiful Fort was located at the banks of the Sutlej containing an underground tunnel connects it to the Fort in Phillaur. It contains great amount of yellow sandstone and granite, forming small hillocks, plateaus and dips.
Trees of Gulmohars and Jacarandas were planted by the British along with other flowering trees, while the Old City contains almost no vegetation or parks, except for a few remote pipal trees, holy to the Hindus.
