Louisville’s initial economy was developed through the shipping and cargo industries. Its strategic position at the fall of the Ohio, as well as its exclusive location in the central United States makes it a perfect location for the transfer of cargo along its route to other destinations. The Louisville and Portland Canal and the Louisville and Nashville Railroad were significant links in water and rail transportation. It still has importance with the presence of the World port global air-freight center for UPS at Louisville International Airport. Louisville’s position at the crossroads of three main Interstate highways (I-64, I-65 and I-71) also plays an important role in the shipping and cargo industry. Louisville ranks as the 7th biggest inland port in the United States.
Louisville is situated at 38°13′44″N 85°44′58″W/ 38.22889°N 85.74944°W (38.228870, -85.749534). It has a total area of 399 square miles, of which, 385 square miles of it is land and 13 square miles of it is covered with water.
