In the past the city was a part of Lancashire, the urbanization and development of Liverpool were brought about due to the formation of port in the city. By the 18th century, trade from the West Indies, Ireland and mainland Europe enhanced the economic expansion of Liverpool. By the early 19th century, 40% of the world’s trade passed through Liverpool’s harbor, contributing to Liverpool’s rise as a key city.
The residents of Liverpool are called Liverpudlians they are also referred as "Scousers", in reference to the local dish known as "scouse", a type of stew. The word "Scouse" has also become identical with the Liverpool inflection and dialect. Liverpool’s great port has contributed to its diverse population, which, in past, were drawn from a wide range of peoples, cultures, and religions, particularly those from Ireland. A lot of residents of the city are from Black African community and the oldest Chinese community in Europe.
The fame of The Beatles and the other groups from the Mersey beat time contributes a lot in the expansion of Liverpool’s tourism industry; and this sector forms a significant part of the city’s modern economy. In 2004, numerous locations across the city centre were granted World Heritage Site status by UNESCO. They are now referred as the Liverpool Maritime Mercantile City; it comprises of six separate locations in the city including the Pier Head, Albert Dock and William Brown Street and includes numerous city’s most renowned landmarks.
