Lima is the capital and biggest city of Peru. It is situated in the valleys of the Chillón, Rímac and Lurín rivers, on a shore overlooking the Pacific Ocean. It forms a adjacent metropolitan area with the seaport of Callao. Lima is the 5th. biggest city in Latin America, behind São Paulo, Mexico City, Buenos Aires, and Rio de Janeiro.

Lima was founded by Spanish conquistador Francisco Pizarro on January 18, 1535, as La Ciudad de los Reyes, or "The City of Kings." It became the most significant city in the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru and, after the Peruvian War of freedom, was made the capital of the Republic of Peru. Today around one-third of the Peruvian inhabitants lives in the urban area.

The metropolitan area of Lima covers about 800 km2. It is situated on mostly flat terrain in the Peruvian coastal plain, within the valleys of the Chillón, Rímac and Lurín rivers. The city slopes softly from the coast of the Pacific Ocean into valleys and mountain slopes situated as high as 500 meters above mean sea level. Within the city exists secluded hills which are not linked to the surrounding hill chains, such as El Agustino, San Cosme, El Pino, La Milla, Muleria and Pro hills. The San Cristobal hill in the Rimac district, which faces in a straight line north of the downtown area, is the local extreme of an Andean hill development.

Precipitation is very little. The severely low rain impacts on water supply in the city. Domestic locations receive 1 to 6 cm of precipitation, which accumulate largely during the winter months. Summer precipitation occurs in the form of remote light and brief afternoon or evening events, leftover from afternoon storms that produce over the Andes. The peak of the ‘rainy season,’ which does not generate "rain" in the true sense of the word, occurs during winter when late-night/morning drizzle events become regular, leaving a light coating of dampness on the ground. All these climatic phenomena happen from the combination of semi-permanent coastal upwelling and the presence of the cold Humboldt Current just offshore.
