Likasi, was previously called Jadotville or Jadotstad, is a city in Haut-Katanga Province, in the south-east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. The estimated population of the city was about 367,000 in 2005. In 1990s the UN set up food centers and refugee centers in and around the area of Likasi to help the refugees fleeing ethnic violence in Shaba, whose arrival had increased the population of the town some 41,000.
In 1961, during the Katanga clash, a company of Irish UN troops deployed to Jadotville was forced to surrender to troops loyal to the Katangese Prime Minister Moise Tshombe. Likasi is the center of vital industry in the region, particularly mining, and is a transport center for the area around. There are mines and refineries supplied by nearby deposits of copper and cobalt.
The city is serviced by a station on the national railway system. The city was shown in the Tamil movie due to its significance the field of diamond production. The city is located in the southeastern side of Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is located along the Likasi River, 86 miles (138 km) northwest of Lubumbashi, to which it is linked by road and rail. In 1892 copper deposits were discovered in the city. The city was actually established in 1917 and was designated an urban district in 1943. It is now one of the nation’s most vital mineral-processing centers, having plants for refining copper and cobalt. There are also chemical factories (sulfuric acid, glycerin) and a brewery. The city has one of the country’s biggest cobalt- and copper-processing centers with associated chemical industries. The town was known as Jadotville until 1966.
