In the older times it was the part of the West Riding of Yorkshire; it has a recorded history linking it to fifth century with the Kingdom of Elmet. In those days the city was covered by the forest of "Loidis", due to which it was given this name. It started its transformation from a small manorial area in to present metropolitan region in thirteenth century, as a result of several reincarnations. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries Leeds became a central hub of production and trading of wool. During the Industrial Revolution, it was developed into a main industrial center for wool, yet having solid industries for flax, engineering, iron foundries, printing and others. During the sixteenth century Leeds expanded and wrapped in the surrounding villages to become a populous metropolitan center.
The diverse collection of landmarks, which comprises of rural open spaces and inspiring buildings, represent its industrial past and current roles. The multicultural nature of the city can be observed by it great religious buildings and cultural festivals. The city is a main center for higher education, containing number of internationally acclaimed Universities like Leeds Metropolitan University and Leeds Trinity University College.
