Kyrgyzstan, officially called the Kyrgyz Republic, is a country in Central Asia. It is surrounded by Kazakhstan to the northern side, Uzbekistan to the western side, Tajikistan to the southwestern side and China to the eastern side. The word “Kyrgyz” originally mean either "forty girls" or "forty tribes", presumably referring to the epic hero Manas who, as legend has it, combined forty tribes in opposition to the Khitans. The 40-ray sun on the flag of Kyrgyzstan symbolizes the forty tribes of Manas. Kyrgyzstan is surrounded by Kazakhstan, China, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The hilly area of the Tian Shan covers over 80% of the country with the remainder made up of valleys and basins.

The weather changes regionally. The south-western Fergana Valley is subtropical and very hot in summer, with temperatures reaching 40°C. The northern hills are moderate and the Tian Shan varies from dry continental to Antarctic type of weather, depending on altitude. In the coldest areas temperatures are sub-zero for around 40 days in winter, and even some desert areas experience constant snowfall in this period.

Kyrgyzstan has considerable deposits of metals including gold and rare earth metals. Less than 8% of the land is cultured, and this is concentrated in the northern lowlands and the fringes of the Fergana Valley. Kyrgyzstan’s terrain is hilly, which accommodates livestock raising, the biggest agricultural activity, so the resulting wool, meat and dairy products are major commodities. Main crops include wheat, sugar beets, potatoes, cotton, tobacco, vegetables and fruit. Kyrgyzstan is rich in mineral resources but has negligible petroleum and natural gas reserves; it imports petroleum and gas. Among its mineral reserves are substantial deposits of coal, gold, uranium, antimony and other valuable metals. The Kyrgyz have historically been semi-nomadic herders, living in round tents called yurts and tending sheep, horses and yaks.
