Kolwezi is a city in Lualaba Province in the south of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, western side of Likasi. It contains an airport and a railway to Lubumbashi. The estimated population of the city was about 418,000. The city is a main mining center for copper and cobalt. There are also uranium, radium, oxide ores, and lime deposits. It was established in 1937 to be the headquarters for the western mining group of the High Katanga Mining Association (UMHK). In 1978 the rebels supported by Angola, occupied the city. The government of Zaire asked the U.S., France, Morocco and Belgium to reinstate the law and order in the city. The French Foreign Legion, were sent in to control the rebel situation and rescue any hostages. The Belgian army was also sent to help 1,800 Europeans to other cities in the region. 700 Africans, including 250 rebels, 170 European hostages and 6 paratroopers died.

The city contains the Kolwezi Airport. This airport is situated about 6 km (4 mi) southern side of Kolwezi. Shaba I was a clash between the neighboring states of Zaire and Angola in 1977, and was perhaps a consequence of Zaire’s hold for the FNLA and UNITA factions in the Angolan Civil War.

The clash began in 1977 when about 2,000 members of the Front for the National Liberation of the Congo, occupied Shaba province in south western Zaire, with the support of Angola’s MPLA government and the possible involvement of Cuban troops. President of the country requested for outside support to retain the country law and order. The war ended when 1,500 Moroccan troops, airlifted into Zaire on April 10 by the French government, beat back the FNLC.
