Kisumu is a port city located in the western side of Kenya at 1,131 m. the estimated population of the city was around 355,024 in 1999. It is the third biggest city in Kenya and a main city of western Kenya, the capital of Nyanza Province and the administrative center of Kisumu District. It has no municipal charter. It is the biggest city in Nyanza Province and second most significant city after Kampala in the greater Lake Victoria basin. The port was established in 1901 as the major inland terminal of the Uganda Railway and named Port Florence. The trade of the city was originated in 1980s and 1990s, but the city’s economy still depends on the oil exports.
The actual meaning of Kisumu is place of barter trade "sumo". The city has "Friendship" status with Cheltenham, UK and "Sister City" status with Roanoke, Virginia, USA. Main attractions in the city are Kibuye Market, the Kisumu Museum, an impala sanctuary, a bird sanctuary, Hippo Point, and the nearby Kit Mikaye and Ndere Island National Park. The Kisumu Museum was established in 1980. This museum consists of series of outdoor pavilions. Some of the pavilions contain live animals. For example, one pavilion contains several aquaria with a wide range of fish from Lake Victoria, along with descriptive posters. Another pavilion consists of mambas, spitting cobras, puff adders and other venomous Kenyan snakes. Additionally, out of doors, the museum has a few additional exhibits, including a snake pit and a crocodile container.
Other pavilions exhibit weaponry, jewellery, farm tools and other artifacts made by a variety of peoples living in the area. Additionally, there are exhibits of stuffed animals, birds and fish. One pavilion houses the prehistoric TARA rock art, which was removed for its own protection to the museum after it was defaced by graffiti in its original location.
