Kismayo is a port city in the Jubbada Hoose area of Somalia, and is the country’s third biggest city. It is located 328 miles southwestern side of Mogadishu, close to the mouth of the Jubba River, where that river flows into the Indian Ocean. The estimated population of the city was around 70,000 inhabitants in 2008. Apart from the Somalis, the district is contains diverse group of people, including Indians, Benadiri, Bantus, Bravanese, Bajunis, and many other minorities. The area is divided in to five degmo, or districts, of which Calanleey is the oldest. These are Farjano, Faanoole, Shaqaalaha, Siinaay and Calanleey
It contains Kismayo Airport, which was previously Somali Air Force training base, is located about 10 km from the city. It has a big abandoned and looted Administration building with a badly-maintained 12,000 foot long runway. The airport was re-opened in October 2008, with the constraint that flights delivering that were prohibited from landing at the airport. The airport was renamed after Imam Ahmed Gurey, a 16th century Somali warrior.
The city contains a huge dock on a peninsula on the Indian Ocean shore. Previously one of the Bajuni Islands, the peninsula was subsequently connected by a narrow causeway when the port was built, with United States assistance, in 1964. The port served as a base for the Somali Navy as well as the Soviet Navy after a military coup in Somalia in 1969. The United States and Somalia mutually refurbished the port in 1984 after "extensive deterioration of the 2070 ft long four-berth, marginal wharf at the Port of Kismayo necessitated a major rehabilitation to maintain operations." As third biggest city of the country, it contains a large population, which is served by a number of local high schools, skills training centers and institutions of higher education. Kismayo University, established in August 2005, is situated about 1 km north, along the Kismayo-Mogadishu main road.
