Kisangani is a city located at the central heart of Africa’s great rainforests. It’s the 3rd biggest city in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the biggest of cities that located in the tropical woodlands of the Congo. It is the provincial capital of Tshopo. Previously called Stanleyville in French, the city got its recent name from Boyoma, the seven-arched falls situated north of the city, whose name was also initially given to the landscape on which the city is situated, Singitini as rendered in Lingala, each of which share the same meaning “the City on the Island”, in reference to the surrounding tributaries. The city is also known as "Kisangani Boyoma", and the demonym for Kisangani is Boyoman.
Kisangani’s economy is the one biggest of cities in Congo Basin and is the biggest in of the North-Eastern Provinces. It’s an intricate center of business and commerce and is one of three "command centers" for the Congolese economy. After independence from Belgium in 1960, the city was reputed to have more Rolls-Royces per capita than any other city in the world.
The economy of the city was dependent on the production of coffee, cotton and rubber. The city is located in the central position on geographical map of the continent of Africa, at the meeting point of Lualaba River and Congo River, the city is the inception and terminus point of river traffic between east and west of DR Congo, playing a vital role in the ‘5 Chantiers’ economic recovery and redevelopment of the RDC. The city is now a vital center of commerce, finance, industry, metallurgy, panning, real estate, hydro industries, agriculture, breweries, technology, culture, media, and arts. It is among one of the great trading centers of Africa; SOTEXKI, the Textile Society of Kisangani produces fabrics and manufactures clothing, while Bralima produces beverages, Pharmaceuticals, printed goods, food processing, telecommunications, textile and apparel manufacturing, tobacco and transportation, also play major roles in the city’s economy.
