Kinshasa is the capital and biggest city of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, called Zaire from 1971 to 1997. The city is located on the Congo River. In past the city was famous for fishing but now a days it is an urban area with an estimated population of 10,076,099 inhabitants in 2009. The city of Brazzaville is capital of the Republic of the Congo, located across the Congo River from Kinshasa. Together with Brazzaville, the estimated population of the entire metropolitan area was around 12 million inhabitants, making it the most heavily populated Trans border metropolitan area in the world. Due to the reason that its administrative boundaries cover such a vast area, over 60% of the city’s land is rural in nature and the urban area only occupies a small section in the far western edge of the province.
Kinshasa is the second biggest city in sub-Saharan Africa and the third biggest in the whole continent after Lagos and Cairo. It is sometimes considered the second biggest francophone city in the world after Paris. It the population of the city grows with this ratio constantly, the city will surpass Paris in population before 2020. Residents of Kinshasa are known as Kinois or Kinshasans. The city has splendid residential and commercial areas and three universities. The city is situated along the south bank of the Congo River, opposite the city of Brazzaville, capital of the Republic of the Congo. This area is the only place in the world where two national capital cities are facing one another and in sight of each other on opposite banks of a river.
The Congo River is the second longest river in Africa after the Nile, and is the biggest in terms of discharge. It provides a means of transport for much of the Congo basin, being navigable for large river barges between Kinshasa and Kisangani, and numbers of its tributaries are navigable too. The river is a vital source of hydroelectric power, and downstream of Kinshasa it has the potential to generate power equivalent to the usage by the whole continent.
