It is the third biggest city in Bangladesh. It is situated on the banks of the Rupsha and Bhairab rivers in Khulna District. It is the capital city of Khulna Division and a main commercial and industrial center. It is located at the distance of 333 kilometers from the capital city of Bangladesh. It is connected with Dhaka by air, road, water transportation and train.Khulna is located in the northern part of the district, and is a major trade center close to the Rupsha and Bhairab rivers. The annual average temperature of Khulna is 35.5 °C.
Khulna is experiencing a major transformation, due to its massively growing population and its standing as Bangladesh’s third biggest city. Khulna is a port city of Bangladesh and 25% of the trade passes through Mongla, while the rest goes through Chittagong. Khulna is also very famous for its Shrimps, because 75% of all shrimps exported from Bangladesh are cultivated in this city. Additionally, a large portion of the Golden Fiber (Jute) is exported through Khulna. Khulna is renowned for its seafood and fish industries. Catfish, Shrimp, Lobster, Prawn and Crab are being exported from Khulna. Khulna is also well-known for its coconut production. Main markets in Khulna are Daak Bangla, Daulatpur Bazar, Boro Bazar and Khulna New Market. There is no airport in Khulna and all the air transportation is carried through Jessore Airport, which is around 70 km from Khulna.
Khulna is known as Divisional Headquarter and industrial town. The Mongla Seaport is very close to this city. Some of the largest Jute mills in the country are situated here. Khulna is connected with capital city Dhaka by road and boat and by air via Jessore. Lodging and eating facilities are available in this city.
