The Republic of Kenya is a country in East Africa. Situated beside the Indian Ocean, at the equator, Kenya is surrounded by Ethiopia, Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda plus Lake Victoria, and Sudan. The capital city is Nairobi. Kenya extends an area about 85% the size of France or Texas. The inhabitants have grown quickly in recent decades to nearly 38 million. Kenya has many wildlife reserves, containing thousands of animal species.
The country is named after Mount Kenya, a major sight and the second among the highest mountain peaks of Africa. The area now known as Kenya was known as the British East Africa colony and so there was no need to mention mount when referring to the mountain.
Kenya is the world’s forty-seventh largest country. From the shore on the Indian Ocean the Low plains go up to central highlands. The high ground are bisected by the Great Rift Valley; a fertile upland in the east. The Kenyan high ground contains one of the most flourishing agricultural production regions in Africa. The highlands are the location of the highest point in Kenya: Mount Kenya, which reaches 5,199 m (17,057 ft) and is also the position of glaciers. Weather varies from tropical along the shore to dry in the inner areas. Mount Kilimanjaro can be seen from Kenya to the South of the Tanzanian border.
Kenya has a hot weather. It is hot and moist at the shore, temperate inland and very arid in the north and northeast parts of the country. There is however a lot of rainfall between March and May, and modest rain in October and November. The temperature remains high throughout these months.
Nairobi continues to be the main communication and financial center of East Africa. It enjoys the region’s best transportation connections, communications infrastructure, and trained personnel. A broad range of foreign firms uphold regional branch or representative offices in the city. In March 1996, the Presidents of Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda re-established the East African Community (EAC). The EAC’s objectives include harmonizing tariffs and customs regimes, free progress of people, and civilizing regional infrastructures. In March 2004, the three East African countries signed a Customs Union Agreement.
