Kansas is a state situated in the Midwestern United States. Its name comes from the Kansas River which runs through it, which in turn was named after the Kansa tribe, who populated the region. The tribe’s name is often said to mean “people of the wind” or “people of the south wind,” even though this was almost certainly not the term’s original meaning. Inhabitants of Kansas are called “Kansans.” Historically, the region was home to great numbers of nomadic Native Americans who hunted bison. It was first settled by European Americans in the 1830s, but the pace of settlement accelerated in the 1850s, in the midst of political wars over the slavery issue. When formally opened to accommodation by the U.S. government in 1854, abolitionist Free-Stators from New England and pro-slavery settlers from adjacent Missouri arrived to the territory to determine if Kansas would become a free state or a slave state.
Kansas is surrounded by Nebraska on the northern side; Missouri on the eastern side; Oklahoma on the southern side; and Colorado on the western side. The state is divided into 105 regions with 628 cities, and is situated equidistant from the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. The geographic center of the 48 adjacent states is situated in Smith County close to Lebanon. The geodetic center of North America was situated in Osborne County until 1983. This spot was used until that date as the central reference point for all maps of North America produced by the U.S. government. The geographic hub of Kansas is situated in Barton County.
The Kansas financial system is also heavily influenced by the aerospace industry. Quite a few large aircraft corporations have manufacturing facilities in Wichita and Kansas City, including Boeing, Cessna, Learjet, and Hawker Beech craft .
