Jayapura City is the capital of Papua province, Indonesia, on the island of New Guinea. It is located on Yos Sudarso Bay previously called Humboldt Bay. The estimated population of the city was about 200,000 in 2002. From 1910 to 1962, the city was called Hollandia and was the capital of a district of the same name in the northeast of West New Guinea. It was shortly known as Kota Baru and Sukarnopura before assuming its present name in 1968. The literal meaning of Jayapura, as of Jaipur in Rajasthan, is ‘City of Victory’.
The northern portion of the city was occupied by Japanese forces in 1942. Allied forces drove out the Japanese after amphibious landings near Hollandia, from April 21, 1944. The region served as General Douglas MacArthur’s headquarters until the end of the war of the Philippines in March 1945. Over twenty U.S. bases were established and half a million US personnel moved through the region. In 1945, the Dutch made the city capital of Netherlands New Guinea. After the territory was handed over to the United Nations in 1962, the city became well known as Kota Baru, and retained the name when Indonesia took control in 1963. The city was shortly renamed Sukarnopura, after President Sukarno, until the end of 1968, when it acquired its present name.
It is fourth most heavily populated city after Jakarta, Surabaya, and Bandung. The estimated population of the city was about 2,083,156 in 2007. It also has a vital portion of its population outside of the city limits, especially in Deli Serdang Regency. The city contains several old buildings in Medan that still retain their Dutch architecture. These include the old City Hall, the central Post Office, the Tirtanadi Water Tower, which is Medan City’s icon, and Titi Gantung. There are number of historic places like Maimun Palace, and the Great Mosque (Masjid Raya) of Medan built in 1906 in the Moroccan style by the Dutch architect Dingemans.
