Jackson is the capital and the most crowded city of the U.S. state of Mississippi. It is one of two regional seats of Hinds County and Raymond, but the city also contains regions in Madison and Rankin Counties. The Jackson-Yazoo City joint geometric region, consists of the Jackson urban area and Yazoo City municipal area, has a populace of 565,749, making it the 88th biggest urban region in the United States. Though no Jackson inhabitants lived in the Rankin region section in 2000, that figure had risen to 72 by 2006.
Jackson lies atop the Jackson Volcano and is the only capital city or main populace hub in the United States to have this feature.
