Irbid is also known as Arabella or Arbela in ancient times. It is the capital and the biggest city of the Irbid Governorate. It also has the second biggest metropolitan population in Jordan after Amman. The estimated population of the city was around 660,000, and the city is located about 70 km north of Amman on the northern ridge of the Gilead, equidistant from Pella, Beit Ras and Umm Qais. The city is also nicknamed as ‘Arus asShamaal (Bride of the North) due to its beauty and its position in the north of Jordan.
The city is the third biggest city in Jordan by population after Amman and Zarqa. The metropolitan area of the city is the second biggest in the country. The metropolitan area includes the city of Irbid and surrounding cities and villages, has the second biggest population, and the highest population density in the kingdom. The city is a main ground transportation center between Amman, Syria to the northern side, and Mafraq to the eastern side. The city also contains number of colleges and universities, the two most significant are Jordan University of Science and Technology and Yarmouk University.
The city is divided into 23 city districts forming smaller cities within the metropolitan sphere of influence of Irbid. The villages around the city are Al-Taybeh, Saydoor, Sama al-Rousan, Ibser Abu Ali, Assarieh, Aidoon, Al Hisn, Baleela, Kitim, Beit Ras, Dowgarah, En-Nu`aymeh, Habaka, Houfa Al-Westiyyah, Qumaim, Huwwarah, Imrawah, Ramtha, Sal, Samad, Shajara, Turrah, hatim, melka, Habaka, Kufr-Rahta, Al-Mazar Al-Shamali, Bushra or Bishra, Hareema, Alal, Kufrasad, Kufraan, Jumha, Kufryuba, Zahar, Qum, Sammou’, Izmal, Kufrelma, Sawm, foauta , Zoubia, Rehaba, Kharja, Dair yousef, Dair abos’eed, Dair yosef, kufor kefia, summer, e’nbeh, Dair Esse’neh, Mandah,marw Zabda, as well as the town of Malka.
