Homs is also known as Al Khums is a town located in the Al Murgub District on the Mediterranean coast of Libya. During the period 1983 to 1995 it was the administrative center of the Al Khums District. The city is approximately 3.2 km (2 miles) to the eastern side is the ancient Roman city of Leptis Magna. Al Khums District was a district of Libya from 1983 to 1995. It lay in the northwest of the country, on the Mediterranean Sea. Its capital was Al Khums. The city is famous as the ancient Roman city of Leptis Magna which is 120 km east of Tripoli along the coast. Leptis Magna prospered for 500 years, most intensely under the patronage of hometown boy, Emperor Septimus Severus aka “the Grim African”. The city served by a railway station constructed in 2007. Walterbau of Germany is building a concrete sleeper plant.

The city is located in the Al Murgub district of Libya. This district is one of the main districts of Libya. The estimated population of the district is around 432,202. The widely visited UNESCO World Heritage Site of Leptis Magna is also located in the district. It has a coast on its northern side. On land, it borders the following districts Misratah to the east and south, Tripoli to the northwest and Al Jabal al Gharbi to the west. In 2007 the district was enlarged to include twenty-six Basic People’s Congresses (townships) of what had been the Tarhuna Wa Msalata District.

Leptis Magna is also called Lectis Magna, also called Lpqy or Neapolis, was a main city of the Roman Empire. Its ruins are situated in Al Khums, Libya, 130 km east of Tripoli, on the coast where the Wadi Lebda meets the sea. The site is one of the most spectacular and unspoiled Roman ruin s in the Mediterranean.
