Hawaii is the newest of the 50 U.S. states, and is the only state comprises of islands. It is situated on an archipelago in the central Pacific Ocean, southwest of the continental United States, southeastern side of Japan, and northeastern side of Australia. Its capital is Honolulu on the island of O’ahu. Its population is 1,283,388.

The state covers almost the whole volcanic Hawaiian Island chain, which contains hundreds of islands stretched over 1,500 miles. At the southeastern side of the archipelago, the eight “major islands” are Niʻihau, Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, Kahoʻolawe, Maui, and Hawaiʻi. The last is the biggest, and is often called the “Big Island” or “Big Isle” to avoid confusion with the state.

All Hawaiian isles were developed by volcanoes erupting from the ocean floor from a magma source described in geological theory as a hotspot. Volcanic activity and consequent erosion created inspiring geological facial appearance of the land. The Big Island is the world’s second highest island. Incline shakiness of the volcanoes has generated damaging earthquakes with related tsunamis, particularly in 1868 and 1975.

The weather of Hawaii is characteristic for a hot area, though temperatures and moisture tend to be a bit less severe due to regular trade winds from the east. Summer highs are typically in the upper 80s °F, during the day and mid 70s, at night. Winter day temperatures are typically in the low to mid 80s, and rarely dipping under the mid 60s at night. Snow, not typically related with tropics, falls at 4,205 meters on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island in some winter months. Snow infrequently falls on Maui’s Haleakala. Mount Waiʻaleʻale, on the isle of Kauai, has the second uppermost mean yearly precipitation on Earth, about 460 inches. Most of Hawaii has only two seasons: the dry season from May to October, and the wet season from October to April.
