Hartford is the capital city of the U.S. state of Connecticut. It is situated in Hartford region on the Connecticut River, north of the middle of the state, 24 miles southern of Springfield, Massachusetts. The city has a total area of 18.0 square miles, of which, 17.3 square miles of it is land and 0.7 square miles of it is water. Hartford is surrounded by the towns of West Hartford, Newington, Wethersfield, East Hartford, Bloomfield, South Windsor, and Windsor. The Connecticut River makes the border between Hartford and East Hartford.

The Park River initially separated Hartford into northern and southern portions and was a main section of Bushnell Park but river was completely enclosed and buried by flood control projects in the 1940s. The former course of the river can still be seen in some of the roadways that were built in its place, such as Jewell St. and the Conlin-Whitehead Highway.
