Harar is located in the eastern side of Ethiopia, and the capital of the modern Harari ethno-political division (or kilil) of Ethiopia. The city is situated at a hilltop, in the eastern extension of the Ethiopian high grounds about five hundred kilometers from Addis Ababa with an elevation of 1885 meters. The estimated population of the city was about 122,000, from which 60,000 were males and 62,000 were females. In 1994, the estimated population of the city was about 76,378. For centuries, Harar has been a main commercial center, connected by the trade routes with the rest of Ethiopia, the whole Horn of Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, and, through its harbors, the outside world.
Harar Jugol was listed in the World Heritage in 2006 by UNESCO in recognition of its cultural heritage. It is considered as the 4th holy city of Islam having 82 mosques, three of which date from the 10th century, and 102 shrines. The city is well known for its distinctive, natural processed coffees which bear the same name. The old town of Harar contained around 110 mosques and several other shrines, centered on Feres Magala square. Main buildings include Medhane Alem Cathedral, the house of Ras Mekonnen, the house of Arthur Rimbaud, and the sixteenth century Jami Mosque. Harrar Bira Stadium is the home stadium for the Harrar Beer Bottling FC. One can also visit the market.
An ancient tradition of feeding meat to hyenas has also developed in 1960s. During the striking night show for tourists held in the central areas of the city. Other places of interest are the highest amba overlooking the city, the Kondudo or "W" mountain, which hosts an ancient population of feral horses. A 2008 scientific mission has unleashed efforts for their conservation, as the animals are greatly endangered. The residents of Harar represent many different Afro-Asiatic-speaking ethnic groups, both Muslim and Christian, such as Oromo, Somali, Amhara, Gurage, Tigray, and others.
