Guayaquil is officially called Santiago de Guayaquil. It is the biggest and the most heavily populated city in Ecuador. The estimated population of the entire metropolitan area was around 3.3 million at the end of 2009. It is also a main port of the country. The city is the capital of the Ecuadorian province of Guayas and the administrative center of the namesake canton. The major sources of income of the city are formal and informal trade, business, agriculture and aquaculture. Most companies are working at small and medium businesses levels, adding a vital informal economy occupation that gives thousands of employment. Despite this, the city has a highest rate of underemployment around 40% of the population of the city and unemployment around 11% of Ecuador. The city maintains a fine infrastructure for import and export of products with international standards. Among its main trading points are the Seaport, the biggest in Ecuador and one of the largest influx of shipping on the shores of the Pacific and Jose Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport. Additionally, it has an infrastructure of roads to other cities and provinces, which are considered the best in the country.
The city has a tropical savanna climate. The climate is hot and usually humid all through the year with little deviation in normal temperatures. Precipitation is heavy between January and April, during el Nino years precipitation may increase radically and flooding generally occurs. Normally however, precipitation is minimal from May until mid December due to the cooling influence of the Humboldt Current.
