Guarulhos is the second biggest city in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo and a town of Sao Paulo city itself. Estimated population of the city is around 1,283,253 (2006), the density is 4,035.26 inh./km² and the total area of the city is around 318 km². It is 12th biggest incorporated city in Brazil. It is rated 8th by GDP among Brazilian cities; 2nd in Sao Paulo state. It is the 10th biggest suburb in the world. The name of the city is derived from the Tupi language, and means Eaters, big-bellied people; a reference to the original indigenous inhabitants of the area. Sao Paulo-Guarulhos International Airport (GRU), one of the major Brazilian airports. A famous pop/rock group Mamonas Assassinas came from Guarulhos.
The city is the administrative center of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Guarulhos. It acts as a hub in South America. It has the busiest airport by both passenger traffic and aircraft movements, handling 21,607,303 passengers and 209,638 aircraft movements in 2009. By cargo traffic, it is the second busiest airport in Latin America only exceeded by El Dorado International Airport of Bogotá, also the airport is the 36th busiest airport in the world. However, this airport was placed at third place in number of delayed flights.
The total area of the city is around 3,425 acres (14 km²), of which 5 km² urbanized area, the airport’s infrastructure has its own highway system: Rodovia Helio Smidt from the airport is connected to Rodovia Presidente Dutra and Rodovia Ayrton Senna. All the passenger traffic is separated between two terminals (TPS1 and TPS2). With 260 check-in counters, the airport is operational 24 hours a day. 39 national and international airlines fly from Sao Paulo-Guarulhos to 28 different countries, as well as more than 100 cities in Brazil and the world. Air China is the newest airline to start operations at the airport in December 2009, with flights to China.
