Gharyan or Gharian is a town located in northwestern region of Libya, in Al Jabal al Gharbi District. Before 2007 it was the administrative center of Gharyan District. Gharyan is one of the biggest towns in the Nafusa Mountains, a region populated by Berbers. The city is located on the trade routes of both south to Fezzan and over the Nafusa Mountains. Mayor and town council in Gharyan was established in 1884. The city played a vital role during the resistance against the Italian invasion in the early 20th century. A number of well known Libyan figures during the Italian invasion were from Gharyan such as Asharif Alghyriany.
In the 1920s the Italians constructed a 90 kilometer railway line between Tripoli and a village close to the Gharian city that was destroyed by the British during WWII. The crops and figs are grown for local consumption, with olives and saffron for local use and export. The city is also famous for its ceramics industry. The city is among one of the main districts of Libya. It was situated located in the northwest part of the country and its capital was Gharyan. Under the 2007 reorganization of districts, it became part of Al Jabal al Gharbi District. The district is bordered by Al Jfara from the northern side, Tarhuna Wa Msalata from the eastern side, Bani Walid from the southeastern side, Mizdah from the southern side and Yafran from the western side
Around 70 miles (113km) southern side of Tripoli, the slopes of the Gharian Mountains ascend abruptly from the desert plain to a height of over 2,700 feet (822 meters). They are a wonderful and awe-inspiring scene; bare, brown, and entirely without vegetation. A well-engineered road leads to the summit, and as you look back you can see the road twisting below you among the rocks. This well constructed road will lead you to the village of Gharyan. Just before Gharyan, there is a primitive road to the right, which provides a bumpy trip to a derelict former Italian barracks, a relic of World War II.
