Georgia is a country in the region of Eurasia, located at the juncture of Western Asia and Eastern Europe. It is bordered to the western side by the Black Sea, to the northern side by Russia, to the southern side by Turkey and Armenia, and to the eastern side by Azerbaijan. Georgia covers a territory of 69,700 km² and its population is 4.2 million, largely ethnic Georgians. The past of Georgia can be traced back to the very old kingdoms of Colchis and Iberia, and it was one of the first countries to adopt Christianity as an official religion. At the beginning of the 19th century Georgia became a part of the Russian Empire. Independence was restored in 1991. Like a lot of post-communist countries Georgia suffered from the financial crisis and civil unrest during the 1990s. After the bloodless Rose Revolution, however, the new leadership has established well-organized government institutions, reformed the financial system and guided the country throughout a period of the fastest financial development in its history.
Georgia is a democracy, structured as a secular, semi-presidential republic; however, the idea to reinstate the constitutional monarchy is well-liked in certain circles, most particularly in the Georgian Orthodox Church. It is at present a member of the United Nations, the Council of Europe, the World Trade Organization, the Organization of the Black Sea Economic Cooperation, and GUAM Organization for Democracy and Economic Development. The country seeks to join NATO and, in the longer term, accession to the European Union.
Caucasus Mountain Range separates Georgia from the North Caucasian Republics of Russia. The main roads throughout the mountain range into Russian territory lead through the Roki Tunnel between Southern and Northern Ossetia and the Darial Gorge.
