Francis Town is the second biggest city in Botswana, the estimated population of the city was about 113,315 in 2001, and often known as t the "Capital of the North". It is situated in the eastern side of Botswana, about 400 kilometers north-northeastern side of the capital, Gaborone. Francis Town is situated at the convergence point of the Tati and Inchwe rivers, and close to the Shashe River and 90 kilometers from the international boundary of Zimbabwe. Francis Town was the center of southern Africa’s first gold rush, and is still bounded by old and abandoned mines.


The city is situated on Botswana’s major air and road transport routes; mining and agriculture are playing vital role in the economy of the city. Main mining companies include Tati Nickel,owned by Norilsk Nickel, which has operations at the Selkirk Mine and Phoenix Mine, producing principally cobalt, copper and nickel. The Dumela Industrial Complex, an industrial park, is a main employer in Botswana. The metal Refinery is under construction close to the city and is to be operated in conjunction with Tati. The media of the city includes Botswana’s The Voice newspaper.

The city is home to the second biggest ethnic group in Botswana are traditionally centered on the town and the nearby area. In present days the city has seen a large influx of illegal immigrants from neighboring Zimbabwe. The city is severely infected by HIV and estimated that 40 percent of the inhabitants of the city are suffering from it. Francis Town contains the Supa Ngwao Museum, with exhibits associated to the area’s history and heritage. A new reserve has been built 5 km from central Francis Town on an old Tati Company Farm, the Lady Mary is under construction since 2008 to provide accommodation to the residents and people from towns around. The city contains Cathedral of Our Lady of the Desert, which is the seat of the Apostolic Vicariate of Francis Town.
