Farah is a famous city in western Afghanistan. It is situated at 650 m altitude. It is located at the bank of river Farah. The capital city of Farah Province is Farah City. The Airport protected by coalition forces to transport supplies to needy Afghans throughout Farah Province. There are secondary roads in different directions from the city. It has a great historical value because it contains a citadel built by the famed Alexander the Great. Citadel is one of the fortresses constructed by the Macedonian Conqueror. Farah is a trusted stop between Herat and Kandahar. It was probably the Phra mentioned by Isadora of Charax in the 1st century A.D. In the 5th century Farah was one of the Sassanid Empire’s major strongholds on their eastern front.

Anar Dara is a district in Farah Province, Afghanistan. Its population is 30,000 with 70% Tajik with a Pashtun minority. The capital town, Anar Dara, situated at 801 m altitude, with a population of about 13,300 people. Bala Buluk is a district in Farah Province, Afghanistan. The main village, also called Gulistan, situated at 1434 m altitude in the mountainous part of the district. Pusht Rod is a district in Farah Province, Afghanistan. Its population, which is almost entirely Pashtun with a few Tajiks, estimated at 52,000 in September 2004.

Farah is situated with open desert to the south, making the summers hot and dusty. The people are mostly of Tajik origin. The area around Farah is a dry region consisting mainly of plains and low mountains, drained by the Farah and Harut rivers. The main source of income is agriculture, based on irrigation waters from the rivers or from underground channels (kariz). Crops include wheat, cotton, tobacco, and barley. The plains support goats and sheep, whose wool is used for rug and carpet weaving. The people of Farah have a reputation for being very courageous and hard working.
