Esfahan is situated about 340 km southern side of Tehran and is the capital of Isfahan Province and Iran’s third biggest city after Tehran and Mashhad. The estimated population of the city was about 1,583,609 and the estimated population of the entire metropolitan area was around 3,430,353 in 2006, the second most heavily populated metropolitan area in Iran after Tehran. The cities of Najafabad, Khaneh Esfahan, Khomeini-shahr, Shahin-shahr, Zarrinshahr, Mobarakeh, Falavarjan and Fouladshahr are located with in the boundries of the metropolitan city of Isfahan.
Isfahan is situated on the main north-south and east-west routes going through Iran, and was once one of the biggest cities in the world. The Naghsh-e Jahan Square in Isfahan is one of the largest city squares in the world and an outstanding example of Iranian and Islamic architecture. This has been listed in the World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The city contains wide range of historic monuments from the Sassanid to the Safavid dynasties.
The city is situated in the lush plain of the Zayandeh River, at the base of Zagros mountain range. The city has a climate and regular seasons. It is located at 1,590 meters above sea level; the city is still very hot during the summer with maximum typically around 36 °C. However, with low moisture and reasonable temperatures at night, the weather can be very enjoyable. During the winter, days are mild but nights can be very cold and snow is not mysterious. But, on the whole Isfahan’s climate is very dry. Its yearly rainfall is 113 millimeters, and its only about half that of Tehran or Mashhad and only a quarter that of more exposed Kermanshah. The city is served by the Isfahan International Airport which has domestic flights to Iranian cities and international flights, mainly to regional destinations across Middle East and central Asia. The metro for the city is under construction and will include 2 lines with 43 km length.
