Erdenet is the second biggest city in Mongolia. It is the capital of the aimag (province) of Orkhon. The city is situated in the northern section of the country. It is located in a valley between the Selenge and Orkhon rivers about 150 miles (240 km) northwestern side of Ulan Bator, the capital. The road length between Ulan Bator and Erdenet is about 230 miles (371 km). The estimated population of the city was around 4100 in 1975, 31900 in 1979, 38700 in 1981, 45,400 in 1985, 56100 in 1989 and 86,866 in 2008.

The city was established in 1975 to utilize Asia’s biggest deposit of copper ore and has the fourth biggest copper mine in the world. The "Erdenet Mining Corporation" is a combined Mongolian-Russian venture, and accounts for a majority of Mongolia’s hard currency income.

The city contains Erdenet mines which produced 22.23 million tons of ore per year, producing 126,700 tons of copper and 1954 tons of molybdenum. The mine accounts for 13.5% of Mongolia’s GDP and 7% of tax revenue.
