Edmonton is the capital of the Canadian province of Alberta. The city is situated on the Northern side of River Saskatchewan in the central area of the province, a region having some of the richest farmland. It is the second biggest city in Alberta after Calgary, and is the center of Canada’s sixth-biggest urban area. The hadrosaur Edmontosaurus is named after the city. The city had a population of 730,372, in 2006, making it the northernmost North American city with an urban population over one million. It has the population of around 782,439 in 2009. It has the total area of 684 km2 (264 sq mi), making it larger than Chicago, Philadelphia, Toronto, or Montreal. It has one of the lowest metropolitan population densities in North America, about 9.4% that of New York City. The residents of Edmonton are called Edmontonians.
Edmonton is the main center of the Calgary-Edmonton Corridor and is a major location for oil sands projects occurring in northern Alberta and great diamond mining operations in the Northwest Territories. Edmonton is Canada’s second most heavily populated provincial capital after Toronto city and is a main center for culture, government and education. It hosts number of world-class festivals all over the year, earning it the title of "The Festival City." It contains North America’s biggest shopping malls such as West Edmonton Mall. This mall was the world’s largest mall from 1981 to 2004. The Fort Edmonton Park is Canada’s biggest living history museum.
Edmonton is situated in the center of the province, at an elevation of 668 m (2,190 ft) above the sea level. The terrain in and around Edmonton is usually flat to gently going along the ravines and deep river valleys, such as the North Saskatchewan River valley.
