Dortmund is a city in Germany, situated in the Bundesland of North Rhine-Westphalia, in the Ruhr region. Estimated population of the city is around 587,830 (2005) making it the 7th biggest city in Germany, and 34th biggest in the European Union. The Ruhr River flows south of the city, and the small river Emscher flows through the metropolitan region. The Dortmund-Ems Canal also goes to Dortmund Port, which is the biggest European canal port, and connects Dortmund to the North Sea. Dortmund is called Westphalia’s "green metropolis." Approximately fifty percent of the municipal territory consists of waterways, woodland, agriculture and green spaces with spacious parks like Westfalen Park and the Romberg park.

Borussia Dortmund sports club belongs to Dortmund, which won the UEFA Champions League and the Intercontinental Cup in 1997, and the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup against Liverpool in 1966. the city also has a women’s handball team playing in the first Bundesliga, while the table tennis team and the basketball team SVD 49 Dortmund play their respective second national divisions.

Dortmund Airport is a small Airport, but it rapidly developing to be the best in Germany. This airport is 13 km (8 miles) east of the city center at the city boundary with Holzwickede. The main train station is the third largest long distance traffic junction in Germany. Dortmund port is the biggest canal harbor in Europe; this port is approximately as big as the port on the Rhine River at Duisburg, the world’s largest inland port. The city also serves as a main European and German crossroads for the Autobahn system. For public transportation, the city has an exclusive Stadtbahn, streetcar and bus system. The high tech east-west underground light rail line was opened in 2008, completing the underground service in the city center and replacing the last trams on the surface.
