It is situated on the northern side of Windsor, Ontario; Detroit is the only main U.S. city south to Canada. The city was established in 1701, by the Frenchman Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac. The name of the city is derived from French word Detroit, which means strait, the name is given to the city due to its location on the river connecting the Great Lakes. It is the eleventh most populous city, with 912,062 inhabitants. In 1950, it was the fourth biggest city in the USA, but has since seen a significant shift in its population to the suburbs.


The Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge is the only international wildlife preserve in North America, exclusively situated in the heart of a key urban area. The Refuge includes islands, coastal wetlands, marshes, shoals, and waterfront lands along 48 miles of the Detroit River and Western Lake Erie shoreline.
