Dallas city has the population of 1.2 million is the third biggest city in Texas and the eighth biggest in the United States. The city is a major economic center of the 12 county Dallas Fort Worth Arlington metropolitan regions. This metropolitan area is the fourth biggest metropolitan area in the United States. The city was established in 1841 and formally recognized as a city in February, 1856, the city’s economy is mainly dependent on banking, commerce, telecommunications, computer technology, energy, and transportation; in addition to Dallas only New York City and Houston are the city containing more Fortune than 500 headquarters in the city boundaries. It is situated in North Texas and an important city in the American South/Southwest, Dallas is in the center of the biggest inland urban region in United States that do not have link to the sea.
The city is also historically very significant because it is a center for the oil and cotton industries, it lies along several railroad lines, a solid industrial and financial sector, and its status as a main inland port. Dallas is the administrative center of Dallas County. Some sections of the city, goes into neighboring Collin, Denton, Kaufman, and Rockwall counties. The total area of the city is around 385 square miles, 342.5 square miles is land and 42.5 square miles is filled with water.
Dallas is no longer an industrial city but a lot of goods are still manufactured in the city. Defense and aircraft manufacturing still dominates the economy of the city and nearby townships. Dallas is home to the Dallas Mavericks, and Dallas Stars and Dallas Desperados of the Arena Football League. The Major League Soccer team FC Dallas, formerly the Dallas Burn, used to play in the Cotton Bowl but moved to Pizza Hut Park in Frisco upon the stadium’s opening in 2005.
