Connecticut is a state in the New England section of the northeastern United States. It is surrounded by Rhode Island to the eastern side, Massachusetts to the northern side, and New York to the western and southern sides. Southwestern Connecticut is section of the New York municipal region; three of Connecticut’s eight counties, including the majority of the state’s population, are in the New York City joint area, usually called the Tri-State Region. Connecticut’s center of population is in Cheshire, New Haven County. Connecticut is the 29th most heavily populated state, with 3.4 million inhabitants, and is ranked 48th in size by area, making it the 4th most tightly populated state. Connecticut has a extensive history dating from early colonial times and was significant in the expansion of the federal government.

Connecticut has a moderate weather because of its extensive shoreline on Long Island Sound. Modern Connecticut is also recognized for its prosperity. In the 18th and 19th centuries, Connecticut had an access to raw materials which helped to grow a well-built manufacturing industry, and economic organizations established: first insurance companies in Hartford, then hedge funds in Fairfield region. This affluence has helped give Connecticut the highest per capita income, Human Development Index, and median household income in the country. Connecticut is surrounded on the southern side by extensive Island, on the western side by New York State, on the northern side by Massachusetts, and on the eastern side by Rhode Island. The state capital is Hartford, and the other main cities include Bridgeport, New Haven, Stamford, Waterbury, Danbury and New London. There are 169 incorporated towns in Connecticut.

The highest peak in Connecticut is Bear hills in Salisbury in the northwest edge of the state. The highest point is east of where Connecticut, Massachusetts, and New York meet, on the southern incline of Mount Frissell, whose top lies close to Massachusetts. The Connecticut River flows through the middle of the state, running into Long Island Sound, Connecticut’s outlet to the Atlantic Ocean.
