The Republic of the Congo is also known as Congo-Brazzaville or the Congo, is a country in Central Africa. It is surrounded by Gabon, Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Angolan exclave province of Cabinda, and the Gulf of Guinea.

The region inhabited by Bantu tribes, who built trade relations leading into the Congo River basin. The republic was a French colony. Upon independence in 1960, the previous French area of Middle Congo became the Republic of the Congo. Congo is situated in the central-western part of sub-Saharan Africa, beside the Equator. To the south and eastern side of it is the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is also surrounded by Gabon to the west, Cameroon and the Central African Republic to the north, and Cabinda to the southwest. It has a short Atlantic coast.

The capital, Brazzaville, is situated on the bank of Congo River, in the south of the country, directly across from Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The country is the location for the most lightning strikes in the world. The southwestern side of the country is a coastal area for which the main drainage is the Kouilou-Niari River; the inside of the country consists of a central highland between two basins to the south and north. Forests are under increasing exploitation pressure.

The country is situated on the Equator, the weather is constant whole year, with the average day temperature being a moist 24 °C and nights generally between 16 °C and 21 °C. The average annual precipitation ranges from 1,100 millimeters in south in the Niari valley to over 2,000 millimeters in middle parts of the county. The dry season is from June to August while in the greater part of the country the wet season has two rains maxima: one in March–May and another in September–November.
