The city was named for explorer Christopher Columbus, the city was established in 1812 at the convergence point of the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers, and recognized as a state capital in 1816. It is the biggest city in the U.S. state of Ohio, and the state’s third biggest metropolitan area, behind Cleveland and Cincinnati. It is the administrative seat of Franklin County. The population of the city is around 711,470 (2000). In 2008, Columbus was the 16th biggest city in the United States, with 754,885 inhabitants, and was also the 32nd biggest metropolitan area, the fourth biggest city in the Midwest, and the third most heavily populated state capital in the U.S. Columbus lies within 550 miles (890 km) with half of the population of the United States.
The economy of the city is based on education, insurance, banking, fashion, defense, aviation, food, logistics, steel, energy, medical research, health care, hospitality, retail, and technology. It is ranked as No. 7 best place in the country to operate a business in 2008. In 2007, the city was ranked No. 3 in the United States. It is ranked seventh strongest economy in the United States in 2006, and the best in Ohio. During the period of recession in 2008-2009, Columbus’s economy was not influenced as compare to the rest of country based on decades of diversification work by long-time corporate residents, business leaders, and past political leaders.
The existing administration of the city has sustained this work, although the city faced economic disorder and had to raise taxes, due in part to alleged fiscal negligence. As Columbus is the state capital, there is a huge government existence in the city. Including city, county, state, and federal employers, government jobs offer the biggest single source of employment within Columbus.
