Colombia is a constitutional republic in northwestern South America. Colombia is surrounded to the east by Venezuela and Brazil; to the south by Ecuador and Peru; to the north by the Caribbean Sea; to the northwest by Panama; and to the west by the Pacific Ocean. Colombia has boundaries with Jamaica, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica. With a populace of nearly 45 million people, Colombia has the 29th biggest population in the world and the second biggest in South America, after Brazil. Colombia has the third largest Spanish-speaking population in the world after Mexico and the United States.
Part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, is an area of the world subject to earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. Colombia contains Andes Mountains. Beyond the Colombian Massif these are separated into three branches known as cordilleras: the Cordillera Occidental, running contiguous to the Pacific shore and including the city of Cali; the Cordillera Central, running between the Cauca and Magdalena river valleys and including the cities of Medellín, Manizales and Pereira; and the Cordillera Oriental, expanding north east to the Guajira Peninsula and including Bogotá, Bucaramanga and Cúcuta.
The weather of Colombia is ideal for agriculture, enjoying typical climate patterns for near-equator areas, with tropical and isothermal climate. Other influences are the trade winds and precipitation.
Height not only affects temperature but is also one of the most significant influences on vegetation patterns. The hilly parts of the country can be separated into more than a few vegetation zones according to elevation, although the elevation limits of each zone may vary somewhat depending on the latitude. The most fruitful land and the mass of the inhabitants can be found in the tierra templada, which provide the best conditions for the country’s coffee growers, and the tierra fría, where wheat and potatoes dominate. ahead of this lie the alpine conditions of the zona forestada, 10,500–12,800 ft/3,200–3,900 m and then the treeless grasslands of the páramos. over 15,100 ft, where temperatures are below freezing, is the tierra helada, a zone of permanent snow and ice.
It has estimated 44.6 million people in 2008, Colombia is the third-most crowded country in Latin America, after Brazil and Mexico. The population improved at a rate of 1.9% between 1975 and 2005, predicted to fall to 1.2% over the next decade. Colombia is expected to have a population of 50.7 million by 2015. These trends are reflected in the country’s age profile. In 2005 over 30% of the population was under 15 years old, compared to just 5.1% aged 65 and over.
