Chiang Mai is the biggest and most culturally important city in northern side of Thailand. The city is the capital of Chiang Mai Province. It is situated around 700 km northern side of Bangkok, among some of the highest mountains in the country. The city stands on the Ping River, a main tributary of the Chao Phraya River. In current years it has become an increasingly modern city. It has number of attractions for the approximately 1 million visitors who come each year. Chiang Mai has also got fame in the political area too after the so-called Chiang Mai Initiative was concluded here between the ASEAN countries and the "+3" countries (China, Japan, and South Korea). It has the historic significance due to its strategic location on the Ping River as well as trade routes. In the older times the city has served as a main center for handcrafted goods, umbrellas, jewelry and woodcarving.

The estimated population of the city is around 150,000, the urban sprawl of the city now extends into number of surrounding districts. This Chiang Mai Metropolitan Area has a population of nearly one million people, more than half the total of Chiang Mai Province. The city is divided in to four parts Nakhon Ping, Srivijaya, Mengrai, and Kavila. The first three parts of the city are on the western side while Kavila is situated on the east bank of the Ping River. Nakhon Ping district covers the north side of the city. Srivijaya, Mengrai, and Kavila cover the west, south, and east side respectively. The central part is covered mostly by Srivijaya and partly by Nakhon Ping and Mengrai wards.

King Mengrai established the city of Chiang Mai in 1296, and it succeeded Chiang Rai as capital of the Lanna kingdom. The emperor of the city is called Chao. The city is surrounded by moat and a defensive wall to protect it against potential rivals. The residents of the city generally speak Kham Muang, but Central Thai of Bangkok is used in education and is understood by most. English is normally used in hotel- and travel-related businesses and a lot of locals speak English.
