The Republic of Cameroon is a unitary republic of central and western Africa. It is bounded by Nigeria to the western side; Chad to the northeastern side; the Central African Republic to the eastern side; and Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo to the southern side. Cameroon’s shoreline lies on the Bight of Bonny, part of the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. Natural features include beaches, deserts, mountains, rainforests, and savannas. The highest point is Mount Cameroon in the southwestern side, and the biggest cities are Douala, Yaoundé, and Garoua. Cameroon contain over 200 different ethnic and linguistic groups.
At 475,442 square kilometers, Cameroon is the world’s 53rd biggest country. It is similar in size to Papua New Guinea and somewhat bigger than the U.S. state of California. The country is situated in Central and West Africa on the Bight of Bonny, part of the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean. The country’s neighbors are Nigeria to the west; Chad to the northeast; the Central African Republic to the east; and Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, and the Republic of the Congo to the south.
Cameroon is divided into five main geographic regions illustrious by overriding physical, climatic, and vegetative features. The coastal plain extends 15 to 150 kilometers internal from the Gulf of Guinea and has an average altitude of 90 meters. Exceedingly warm and moist with a little dry season, this belt is thickly forested and includes some of the wettest places on earth, part of the Cross-Sanaga-Bioko coastal forests.
An uneven chain of mountains, hills, and plateaus known as the Cameroon range extends from Mount Cameroon on the shore. Cameroon’s uppermost point is at 4,095 meters. This region has a gentle climate, particularly on the Western High Plateau, although precipitation is high. Its soils are among Cameroon’s most fertile, especially around volcanic Mount Cameroon. Volcanism here has formed crater lakes.
