California is the heavily populated state in the United States, and the third biggest by area. California is the second most crowded sub-national entity in the Americas, behind only São Paulo, Brazil. It is situated on the West shore of the United States, and is surrounded by Oregon to the northern side, Nevada to the northeastern side, Arizona to the southeastern side, the Mexican state of Baja California to the southern side, and the Pacific Ocean to the western side. Its four biggest cities are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose, and San Francisco. The state is home to the nation’s second and sixth biggest urban region as well as eight of the nation’s fifty biggest cities. It is well-known for its diverse weather and geography, as well as its varied populace.

California is the third biggest U.S. state by land vicinity, after Alaska and Texas. Its geography varies from the Pacific shore to the Sierra Nevada hill range in the eastern side, to Mojave Desert areas in the southeastern side and the Redwood–Douglas fir forests of the northwestern side. The middle of the state is dominated by the Central Valley, one of the most dynamic agricultural regions in the world. California is the most geographically varied state in the nation, and contains the highest and lowest points in the adjacent United States.

California weather changes from Mediterranean to subarctic. Much of the state has a moderate weather, with cool, rainy winters and dry summers. The cool California Current offshore often creates summer fog close to the shore. Northern regions of the state have the average higher yearly precipitation than the south. California’s mountain ranges effects the weather as well: some of the rainiest parts of the state are west-facing hill slopes. Northwestern California has a moderate weather, and the Central Valley has a Mediterranean weather but with greater temperature extremes than the shore. The high mountains like Sierra Nevada have a mountain climate with snow in winter and soft to moderate heat in summer.
