Bristol is a city and a ceremonial county in South West England, 105 miles west of London, and 24 miles east of Cardiff. It has an estimated population of 421,300(2008), the surrounding Larger Urban Zone (LUZ) has the estimated population of 1,006,600 residents, it is sixth most heavily populated city of England, and eighth most populous city the United Kingdom, it’s a group of English Core Cities and the most densely inhabited city in South West England.

It received County status in 1373. From the 13th century, it ranked amongst the top three English cities after London, alongside York and Norwich, because of its tax receipts, but after the Industrial Revolution of 18th century Liverpool, Birmingham and Manchester surpassed this city. The city is surrounded by counties of Somerset and Gloucestershire, and is also situated near the historic cities of Bath to the south eastern side and Gloucester to the northern side. The city is built around the River Avon, and it also has a short shoreline on the Severn Estuary.

Bristol is the biggest center of culture, employment and education in the area. Its affluence has been associated with the port right from its initial establishment. Previously the commercial Port of Bristol was inside the city centre but was transferred to Royal Port bury Dock is on the western edge of the city border. In the current years the economy of the city is run through creative media, electronics and aerospace industries, and the city center docks have been regenerated as a center of heritage and culture. Interestingly there are 34 other populated cities all over the globe named Bristol, most in the United States, but also in Peru, Canada, Jamaica and Costa Rica, all apparently honoring the original.
