The city of Boma in Congo Central Province was the capital city of the Belgian Congo. It the city is famous for exporting tropical timber, bananas, cacao, and palm products. The estimated population of the city was about 527,725 in 2009. The city was established as a slaving station and entrepot by merchants of many European countries in the 16th century. It is located by the Atlantic Ocean. In the past times the city was served by a 610mm gauge railway line from Tshela. Antoine-Roger Bolamba, politician and poet, was born here in this city in 1913.


It is a main city and a vital port on the Congo River estuary, southwestern side of Democratic Republic of the Congo. It is located 60 miles (100 km) from the Atlantic Ocean. One of the nation’s oldest communities, it was a trading center and slave market before the middle of the 19th century. In 1886 Boma became the capital of the Congo Free State, later the Belgian Congo, until replaced by Leopoldville (now Kinshasa) in 1926. Boma is the terminus of a railroad to Tshela and is the outlet for palm oil, bananas and timber.
